A woman expat has been charged in Dubai for locking up a man inside a flat and robbing him along with four accomplices. The woman – with the help of four other women – allegedly locked up a Nepali man inside a flat after luring him with a massage offer. They then robbed him of Dh60,300.
She was referred to trial and charged at a Dubai court on Thursday. The 34-year-old Nigerian defendant, with her accomplices, held the victim in the flat against his will and robbed him by threatening to kill him, the court heard.
The defendant faced unlawful imprisonment under duress and forced robbery charges at the Dubai Court of First Instance. She has been kept in detention. The case dates back to June 10, 2018, and was registered at Al Rafaa police station.
According to case details, the gang of women distributed a massage business card with a mobile phone number on it in a bid to lure unsuspecting customers and rob them. The complainant, a 33-year-old Nepali driver, said that he had found a massage business card and contacted the number on the card via WhatsApp.
“I was led to a flat in Al Rafaa. Once inside the place, I was taken by surprise by eight African women, who overpowered me and locked the door.
“They assaulted me and forcefully stole Dh60,300 from me. They threatened me to not report them to the police. I fled the place after they let me go later. I identified some of them, among other suspects, at the police station.”
During interrogation by a police sergeant, the defendant confessed to robbing the Nepali victim with her accomplices.
“The woman also confessed that she had been brought to the UAE by a woman to work at an apartment, which included luring men with massage offers and then holding them captive before robbing them.”
A police corporal told the prosecutor that the building, where the incident took place, was not equipped with surveillance cameras. The suspects were apprehended at another flat in connection with a similar crime. The trial has been adjourned to August 1.
