A man, accused of as’saulting a police officer, was cleared of the charge by a Dubai court on Monday (July 22). Court records show that on June 4, the 44-year-old defendant from Bosnia-Herzegovina reportedly pushed an officer who showed up at his place following a complaint over loud music. The resident was later taken into custody by the Jebel Ali police.
At the Court of First Instance, he denied the charges of phy’sically assau’lting an on-duty police officer and consuming al’cohol without a permit. Though the man was acquitted of as’sault, the court ordered him to pay a Dh2,000 fine for the liquor consumption charge.
According to the police officer’s statement, when he went to the defendant’s flat, the man looked “agitated”.
“Loud music could be heard from his place. He looked very agitated when he opened the door and asked us about the reason we were there. He began to yell at us and was apparently d’runk,” the cop told the public prosecution.
When the officer asked the accused to step out and resolve the matter, the latter allegedly pus’hed him several times. He was then taken into police custody.
The ve’rdict remains subject to appeal.
